The Emperor had little power but was above the Shogun.
-The Shogun were powerful military leaders. They basically controlled the government while Emperors just acted as figureheads.
-The Diamyo's are below the Shogun's and they are landowners who samurai's are supposed to protect.
-The samurai's were soldiers.
-Ronin were samurai's basically but their dishonor and misdeeds caused their nobleness to be questioned and they were lowered on the social class list.
-Peasants tended to farms and served the people of Japan.
-Artisans were underneath peasants and they were craftsmen. Making armor and swords, etc.
-Merchants are at the bottom of the social class due to the fact that they sold things that artisans made.
The family structure was more like you marry who you grew up with. In a way it was arranged marriage but it was more easily persuaded since they had grown up around each other and the families were close.
Role of Women:
A Samurai woman- when she is young obeys her father, when she I'd married obeys her husband, and when she is widowed she obeys her son. If she had a daughter then it was her duty to teach the girl to read, write, and how to behave.
A Peasant woman- women work alongside the men in the fields. Men controlled the money put the woman made sure necessities were available; They were allowed to put money towards food, clothes, and taxes. Peasant women lost much of their freedom when society decided that the peasant women should be as submissive to the man just as the samurai women were to their men.
