There were a number of major achievements in ancient Japan. One of the most significant took place in 1225, which is when the Council of State was created. The Council of State gave the military lords the opportunity to use their legislative and judicial authority in Kamakura.
During the 1300s, the Japanese developed Nō theatre in which men wore decorative mask and performed on stage, while a chorus sang the lines. Nō theatre reflected Buddhist ideas such as resisting selfish behavior. In the 1600s, Kabuki theatre began. Kabuki was similar to Nō, except the stories were usually comedic or melodramatic presentations of everyday life or historic events.
Japanese literature appeared in many forms, with the most prominent being the Haiku. A Haiku is a 3 line poem that has 17 syllables in the Japanese language, that expresses a single thought, feeling or idea. Other forms of literary achievement include stories of war and conflict, and a few books written by women. Another accomplishment from feudal Japan was the wood block printing.
